PERSONALITY
""Mother... Zidane... No... I can't depend on them anymore! As the queen of Alexandria, I must protect my kingdom.""

Despite being a white mage, the class of healing, Princess Garnet Til Alexandros is a fighter.

Most of the game's plot is driven by Garnet's drive to save her kingdom and stop a war being waged by her mother and Kuja. Even when she feels she's completely in over her head, Garnet never gives up on her goals. While more reserved and modest than her talkative and almost-cocky companion Zidane, Garnet is by no means a coward. Instead she is the one who will more frequently plunge head first into danger, much to the shock and dismay of her friends. When Garnet has a goal in mind, she lets nothing stand in her way.

Unfortunately, living in the castle all her remembered life has made Garnet to be a bit on the naive side. She doesn't understand the ways of the world that well, from the small things such as the effects of bugs on crops to larger ideas like what would cause her mother to be so set on war. This naivety often gets her into troublesome situations, as she will sometimes trust a person she should not or jump into situations far more dangerous than she realized and thus, requires her to need aid of people to get her out of these situations.

But even with her naive nature, Garnet should never be taken for a fool. On the contrary, she's incredibly clever when she needs to be and tends to catch onto things rather quickly if there is no emotional stake driving a wedge. Coupled with the fact she can be a very good actress, this can make her rather dangerous to cross in her own regard. She is good at compiling new information and observant at times as well.

While she frequently plunges head first into danger, often times Garnet will do her best to take time and think things through. She also knows when to seek counsel from other people in regards to decisions, though her age and inexperience can sometimes make her too reliant on other people's opinions if she's not careful. She even notices this tendency of hers and will reprimand herself for it, forcing herself to stand strong on her own. As you can imagine, these moments have mixed results.

One of the hardest judges of Garnet is herself. She holds extremely high expectations of herself, and is incredibly self-deprecating when she does not meet those standards. In truth, most of her failings that occur over the course of the game are incredibly understandable due to her young age and the circumstances. Many of the problems that crop up are completely out of her control. Yet Garnet frequently doesn't see it this way, constantly blaming herself for everything that occurs.

This tendency of hers is ironically one of her worst faults, as at one point it becomes so strong that she renders herself mute and unable to concentrate in her missions as she's much too busy blaming herself for catastrophes that were out of her control. Guilt and grief for her are too frequently tangled with one another for Garnet, and she spends far too much time reflecting on the mistakes of the past and seeking amends instead of moving forward.

Once Garnet leaves the castle walls, she grows to love traveling and the freedom that comes along with it. She becomes excited at the sight of new places and things, often wandering off to explore new areas and towns from Zidane. She remarks that most of her knowledge of the world has only come from books and plays, so it thrills her to actually see things with her own eyes. Having this freedom suddenly taken away is jolting for the Princess, as seen when she's not allowed to leave Lindblum Castle when she wishes to explore the city due to her own safety. While after the initial shock she understands the needs for occasional precautions, if the issue of her safety is pushed too far she begins to resent and resist- causing trouble for all.

Yet even though Garnet enjoys the freedom and adventure that comes with posing as Dagger the commoner, she has little desire to be anyone else but herself. She is comfortable with being the princess and with the idea that one day she will be the Queen (although that day comes sooner than she had hoped). Even when she finds out the truth about her heritage, and that she is not the princess by blood- when duty calls for her to take the throne she still is willing to give up adventuring with a man she had grown to love in order to fulfill her duty to her people as Queen.

It should be noted that she does not desire the position of Queen for it's power. She is often fearful of power, to the point that in the first part of the game she is unable to use her Eidolons out of fear of their destructive force. Rather she accepts the position of Queen out of love for her people and kingdom. The amount of love in her heart often shows up in many aspects of her life, whether it be quickly becoming attached to her traveling companions or a desire to save the mother who raised her even after the woman proved again and again she no longer cared for her daughter. It is also a desire to protect her kingdom and the people she loves that finally makes her accept her power as a summoner. Love and compassion are frequently the motivation for the actions she takes.

As I said before, despite her white mage class Garnet is a fighter. She fights for the kingdom and people she loves and is a force to be reckoned with. While her naivety and over self-deprecation can hold her back a lot, if her heart is set on something she'll let nothing stand in her way.
